Member Spotlight: Bree Deverill

This week we’re spotlighting one of our members, Bree Deverill. A member since March of 2022, Bree uses the makerspace as a playground for her multimedia art and design practice. From using the wood shop to construct custom frames for a group exhibition at the Phoenix Zoo, to creating 2D and 3D artworks and maquettes on the laser cutters, she has found Phoenix Forge to be the perfect place to experiment and explore her relationship to materials and her own process. “Phoenix Forge is that playground, for anyone that wants to learn something new, try something new…It is a really safe place to fail,” said Bree.

Born in Singapore, Bree says her life and journey to art and making was anything but linear. Trained as an interior designer, she traveled the world and landed in Arizona in 2017. Here, Bree has found a connection to stark landscapes of the desert, and seasonal shifts that match her creative process. At the Forge, she has built a relationship with the simplicity and natural beauty of wood. Inspired by architect and designer Frank Ghery, her recent work explores shadows, textures, and form. Like her life, her creative process is also non-linear, moving from digital sketches, to 2D and 3D sculptures, to relief prints on paper. “The whole purpose of me spending time here is not to become master of one, but a jack of all trades,” she said.
