Part-Time Metal Shop Instructor

GateWay Community College is seeking a Part-Time Metal Shop Instructional Specialist at the Phoenix Forge Makerspace in downtown Phoenix.

The Part-Time Metal Shop Instructional Specialist is responsible for a variety of instructional support and technical support tasks in the makerspace shops. The Specialist will assist and may teach shop orientation/safety classes, or specialty classes such as metal fabrication techniques or CNC machining, as needed, depending on their skills. This position also supports public members with personal projects as well as helping students or faculty who are working on projects for their classes, so this position needs to be flexible, patient, and creative to support a wide variety of requests for assistance.

The Specialist for this area also helps to maintain equipment, tools, supplies, and shop inventory as directed by the Senior Instructor. The Specialist may also assist in the development of video demonstrations, workshops, and instructional kits for online delivery (as free YouTube content or housed in our Learning Management System for paid short classes). As time allows, the Specialist will also help to develop our member community with a focus in this area of the makerspace. If there are gaps in scheduling wood shop staff, the Metal Shop Instructional Specialist may occasionally be asked to monitor the wood shop and handle requests for assistance.

Outside of their scheduled work hours, this position will have free access to makerspace equipment and tools (after appropriate safety training), and access to makerspace equipment training classes.

May be asked to assist members with tool checkout. This position may also be trained to provide support for members using 3D printers, laser cutters, screen printing equipment, textile/quilting equipment, and related tools.

Outside of their scheduled work hours, this position will have free access to makerspace equipment and tools (after appropriate safety training), and access to makerspace equipment training classes.
